HOW TO REPAIR YOUR SKIN AFTER SUMMER

Why does our skin suddenly look so much older at the end of summer?

At the end of every summer, I hear the same concern:

“I feel as if my skin has aged dramatically in just a few weeks.”

Fine lines look deeper, the skin feels rougher and less elastic, new dark spots appear, and the face seems to have lost some of its radiance and firmness.

This does not mean we have literally aged several years over the summer. What has happened is that different forms of skin stress have accumulated and, once the initial glow of the tan begins to fade, their effects become much more visible.

A tan may look beautiful, but we must remember that it is actually part of the skin’s defence response to ultraviolet radiation.

A TAN IS A PROTECTIVE RESPONSE

When the skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation, it increases melanin production in an attempt to protect cellular DNA from further exposure. The colour we find so attractive is the visible part of this defensive mechanism.

In countries with clearly defined seasons, we often spend many months with relatively low sun exposure and then suddenly concentrate a considerable amount of UV exposure into the summer: longer days outdoors, holidays, beaches, swimming pools, sports and terraces.

The skin must adapt quickly to a much higher intensity of radiation. And even when we do not burn, this does not mean that no damage has occurred. Repeated and cumulative ultraviolet exposure also contributes to photoageing.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SKIN DURING SUMMER?

1. THE SURFACE BECOMES THICKER AND ROUGHER

As part of its defence response, repeated sun exposure can disrupt normal epidermal renewal and cause the stratum corneum to thicken.

Dead skin cells accumulate less evenly, making the surface less effective at reflecting light. The skin begins to look dull, hardened and uneven in texture.

When the skin’s surface is also dehydrated and rough, fine lines become much more noticeable. This is one reason why it can feel as if all our wrinkles have suddenly appeared at the same time.

2. DEHYDRATION INCREASES

Heat, solar radiation, air conditioning, wind, seawater and swimming-pool chlorine can all increase water loss and disrupt the skin barrier.

Dehydrated skin temporarily loses flexibility and reflects light less effectively. It looks duller, feels tighter and appears visibly older.

This can happen even in oily skin. Producing more sebum does not mean that the skin has enough water or a properly balanced barrier.

3. COLLAGEN BREAKDOWN ACCELERATES

Ultraviolet radiation generates oxidative stress and activates a group of enzymes known as matrix metalloproteinases, or MMPs.

These enzymes contribute to the breakdown of collagen and other components of the extracellular matrix. UV radiation can also interfere with the formation of new collagen. Over time, the result is a less organised dermal structure and a progressive loss of firmness and elasticity.

This is one reason why the face can appear less firm and lines may look deeper after the summer. MMPs—particularly MMP-1—are widely recognised as important contributors to the collagen degradation associated with photoageing.

4. DARK SPOTS AND UNEVEN TONE APPEAR

Melanin is not always distributed evenly. Following intense sun exposure, new dark spots may emerge, while existing pigmentation that was already developing beneath the surface can become more visible.

Inflammation, hormonal changes, certain medications and individual predisposition can intensify this response.

5. THE SKIN BARRIER BECOMES MORE VULNERABLE

At the end of summer, some skins are not only dehydrated but also irritated, reactive or affected by a compromised barrier.

For this reason, I do not recommend automatically responding with aggressive exfoliation, excessive acids or several intensive treatments introduced at the same time. Stressed skin needs to recover its balance first.

PREVENTION IS ALWAYS THE BEST STRATEGY

The first step is to reduce unnecessary exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen correctly.

However, sunscreen should not be our only strategy. No product provides complete protection if we spend too many hours in the sun, apply too little or fail to reapply it.

Prevention also means maintaining skin that is:

  • Properly hydrated.

  • Supported by a strong skin barrier.

  • Protected against oxidative stress.

  • Supplied with soothing and repairing ingredients.

  • Supported by ingredients that help optimise its natural functions.

The better prepared the skin is before summer, the greater its ability to cope with environmental stress—and the less likely it is to need an intensive rescue treatment afterwards.

IF THE DAMAGE HAS ALREADY OCCURRED, THE SKIN NEEDS A COMPLETE DIET

After summer, many people search for a single miracle ingredient: vitamin C, retinol, an exfoliating acid or a very rich cream.

But the skin cannot function properly on one nutrient alone.

In the same way that a healthy diet cannot consist exclusively of protein or vitamins, an effective skincare routine must provide several complementary functions in the correct balance.

In The A Skincoach™ Method, this daily foundation is built around five essential skin needs:

  1. Hydration, to restore water, flexibility and comfort.

  2. Lipids and barrier support, to reduce water loss and improve the skin’s resilience.

  3. Repairing ingredients, to support the skin’s natural recovery processes.

  4. Antioxidant protection, to help neutralise oxidative stress.

  5. Cell communication, through biomimetic peptides that support functions related to firmness and renewal.

We then adapt the amount of lipids and the texture of each product to the individual skin type.

PROTOCOL FOR OILY SKIN

STEP 1 · HYAL+C FACE SERUM

Hyal+C is a concentrated oil-free serum designed to deliver hydration and protection without adding heaviness.

It combines:

  • Hyaluronic acid.

  • Stabilised vitamin C.

  • Organic silicon.

  • A marine exopolysaccharide.

  • A biomimetic moisturising complex.

  • Panthenol.

  • Niacinamide.

  • A complex of three biomimetic peptides.

This combination helps replenish lost moisture, support the skin barrier, soothe the skin and protect it against oxidative stress.

Stabilised vitamin C helps improve radiance and the visible uniformity of the complexion, while the peptide complex supports firmness and the skin’s regenerative functions.

It is also an excellent option for male skin when oil production is normal or high. This is not because men’s skin requires different nutrients, but because it often benefits from lighter textures, particularly when there is higher sebum production or frequent shaving.

PROTOCOL FOR COMBINATION TO NORMAL

STEP 2 · SHINE FREE AGE DEFYING CREAM

To complete the routine, I recommend applying Shine Free after the serum.

This ultra-light cream delivers hydration, antioxidants, repairing ingredients and peptides without leaving a heavy finish. It contains niacinamide, stabilised vitamin C, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and active compounds from Centella asiatica, together with our 3D peptide complex.

This combination is ideal for normal, combination or oily skin that needs to recover comfort, softness and radiance without increasing shine.

PROTOCOL FOR NORMAL TO DRY SKIN

STEP 1 · RESURFACING GLOW SERUM

Resurfacing Glow Serum is a biphasic formula based on the same philosophy of hydration, antioxidant protection, repair and cell communication, with the addition of a lipid phase containing squalane.

Squalane helps soften the skin, improve flexibility and reduce water loss. This makes it particularly suitable when the skin feels dry, tight, rough or especially uncomfortable after summer.

Its combination of hyaluronic acid, stabilised vitamin C, organic silicon, marine exopolysaccharide, panthenol, niacinamide and peptides helps the skin gradually recover a smoother, more supple and radiant appearance.

Despite its name, “resurfacing” does not mean that this is an aggressive peel. Its purpose is to improve the appearance of the skin’s surface while providing hydration, lipids and repairing support.

STEP 2 · RESURFACING GLOW CREAM

For dry skin, the serum should be followed by Regenerating Face Cream.

Its richer texture helps replenish the lipids the skin needs to maintain a strong barrier and reduce water loss. It combines squalane, niacinamide, stabilised vitamin C, panthenol, aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, active compounds from Centella asiatica and biomimetic peptides.

The result is a complete routine that provides both water and lipids, together with antioxidant protection and repairing support.

If your skin is normal or combination but you prefer the luminous finish of Resurfacing Glow Serum, you can combine it with Shine Free Cream for a lighter final texture.

HOW SHOULD YOU USE THE ROUTINE?

IN THE MORNING

  1. Cleanse the skin gently.

  2. Apply Hyal+C or Resurfacing Glow Serum according to your skin type.

  3. Follow with Shine Free or Regenerating Face Cream.

  4. Always finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

IN THE EVENING

  1. Cleanse thoroughly to remove sunscreen, sweat and pollution.

  2. Apply the serum selected for your skin type.

  3. Finish with the cream that provides the appropriate level of lipids for your skin.

When the skin barrier is particularly sensitised, keep the routine simple for a while and avoid introducing strong exfoliants, retinoids or several intensive active ingredients simultaneously.

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE END OF SUMMER TO CARE FOR YOUR SKIN

These protocols are not designed solely as rescue treatments.

Their greatest value comes from using them consistently before, during and after summer. Skin that receives water, lipids, antioxidants, repairing ingredients and peptides every day is better prepared to cope with periods of greater environmental exposure.

Cosmetics cannot erase all existing sun damage or replace sunscreen. Nor can they single-handedly rebuild all the collagen that has been degraded over many years.

However, a consistent and well-formulated routine can significantly improve hydration, barrier function, texture, radiance and the overall appearance of the skin, while helping to prevent some future damage.

Your skin should not need an emergency solution every September.

It needs a balanced diet throughout the year.

NOT SURE WHICH PROTOCOL YOUR SKIN NEEDS?

Through my A Skincoach™ treatment, I assess the current condition of your skin, its hydration level, oil production, sensitivity and the treatments you already use to create a personalised routine.

Because skincare is not about adding more products.

It is about giving your skin exactly what it needs.
