What are the benefits of squalane for dry skin?

Squalane helps hydrate, repair, and protect dry skin naturally. It is a key ingredient in conscious, sensorial skincare. Click to read more.

Squalane is one of those silent yet powerful ingredients. Naturally present in the skin, this plant-derived lipid has conquered the world of skincare thanks to its ability to restore, protect, and balance hydration, especially for dry or dehydrated skin. Dry skin needs lipids to restore its equilibrium. Squalane not only hydrates but also seals moisture into the skin, acting as a natural shield against dehydration. It also soothes and softens, bringing comfort even to the most reactive skin.

In synergy with other ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, coconut triglycerides, or Vitamin C, it multiplies its regenerative and protective power.

What is squalane and why is it so valued?

Squalene is a lipid molecule that forms part of our skin’s hydrolipid barrier. Over time – or due to external factors like cold, sun, or stress – this barrier weakens, causing tightness, flaking, or loss of elasticity. This is where squalane comes in. Dry skin needs lipids to restore its balance. Squalane not only hydrates but seals moisture within the skin, acting as a natural shield against dehydration. It also calms and softens, providing comfort even to the most reactive skin.

Its key benefits:

✔ Strengthens the skin’s natural barrier
✔ Provides deep hydration without a greasy feel
✔ Improves elasticity and softness
✔ Reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL)
✔ Non-comedogenic and suitable for sensitive skin

Additionally, because it has a structure similar to human sebum, it absorbs easily, leaving a silky, non-occlusive feel.

How is squalane produced and why is it so valued?

Biotechnological Fermentation

Instead of being derived from shark liver oil (as it was in the past) or olives (which can be more variable), squalane is produced via fermentation of yeast fed with plant sugars, especially sugarcane. This is a clean, traceable process with no impact on marine species or ecosystems.

Why is it sustainable?

100% bio-based, certified by the USDA BioPreferred® Program
✔ Meets ECOCERT standards for natural cosmetics
✔ Minimal waste and high energy efficiency
✔ Its plant origin makes it suitable for vegan and clean beauty formulations

What makes it special for your skin?

✔ Perfect mimic of the squalene naturally present in human skin
✔ Hydrates without leaving a greasy feel
✔ Stable, does not oxidise easily
✔ Compatible with sensitive or compromised skin

What is the difference between squalane and squalene?

Squalene is a lipid naturally produced by your skin and forms part of sebum. However, it is unsaturated and easily oxidises, making it unstable and unsuitable for direct cosmetic use. It is found in vegetable oils, such as olive oil, and was formerly sourced from shark liver.

Squalane, on the other hand, is the stable, saturated derivative of squalene used in cosmetics. It does not oxidise, making it ultra-stable. Today, squalane is obtained via sugarcane fermentation (for example, Neossance™ Squalane). It is an ideal moisturising ingredient because it is lightweight, biomimetic, and non-comedogenic. While squalene acts as a natural defence and lubrication component in the skin, squalane acts as a clean emollient, improving elasticity and skin comfort.

The Today Project touch: plant-derived squalane and conscious luxury

At The Today Project, we use plant-derived squalane sourced from olive oil for its high compatibility with the skin and ecological profile. This active is present in several of our most complete formulas for dry or dehydrated skin:

  • Resurfacing Glow Cream: an illuminating moisturiser combining squalane, hyaluronic acid, and stabilised Vitamin C to restore elasticity and radiance.

  • Resurfacing Glow Serum: a renewing serum with anti-ageing action and a lightweight texture, ideal for skin seeking comfort without heaviness.

  • Relief Comforting Serum: a calming serum for reactive or sensitised skin, enriched with squalane and anti-inflammatory actives for stronger, more balanced skin.

These are clean, effective, and sensorial formulas, developed with a circular beauty approach and a conscious commitment to your skin and the planet.
