Brittle hair after summer? Let me explain it with science
Is your hair feeling brittle, dry, and weak at the end of summer? Don’t worry—it’s normal, and there’s a scientific reason.
What happened to your hair?
Hair is made mostly of keratin, a very tough protein. On the outside, the cuticle (overlapping “scales,” like a fish) protects the strand. Beneath it lies the cortex, where your color, strength, and elasticity live.
Over summer:
UV radiation degrades keratin, breaks bonds, and generates free radicals.
Sea salt and pool chlorine swell and lift the cuticle, so hair loses water, tangles, and breaks.
Wind and friction erode those scales even more.
Result: more porous, dull hair with split ends.
What we can improve
Broken fibers won’t “glue” back together, but we can:
Compact the cuticle to reduce friction (help those scales lie flatter).
Nourish the inner fiber with lipids that fill gaps.
Add antioxidants to limit further damage.
Hydrate to preserve and recover elasticity.
