COCAMYDOPROPYL BETAINE

Cocamidopropyl Betaine is an amphoteric surfactant commonly used in shampoos, body washes and facial cleansers. It acts mainly as a secondary surfactant, helping improve foam, viscosity and the overall mildness of a cleansing system.
It is produced by reacting fatty acids, frequently obtained from coconut oil, with dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA). The resulting amidoamine intermediate is subsequently converted into Cocamidopropyl Betaine. Although part of its carbon content may come from renewable fatty acids, the complete molecule is chemically synthesised.
Function in cosmetic formulas
Cocamidopropyl Betaine supports cleansing and foam formation and can help reduce the harshness of stronger anionic surfactants when they are combined in a properly balanced formula. Its performance and skin compatibility depend on the complete surfactant system, concentration, pH and finished-product assessment.
Purity and sensitisation
The principal concern associated with Cocamidopropyl Betaine is not necessarily the molecule itself, but residual substances from its manufacturing process—particularly DMAPA and amidoamine. These impurities have been associated with allergic contact reactions, and their concentrations can vary according to the quality and purification of the commercial raw material.
For this reason, we evaluate the supplier’s impurity specifications and assess the safety of the complete finished formula rather than judging the ingredient solely by its name.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine does not spontaneously produce nitrosamines. However, residual amines may participate in nitrosation when suitable nitrosating agents are present. Our formulation criteria therefore exclude intentional combinations capable of creating nitrosating conditions.
This ingredient demonstrates why raw-material quality, impurity control and complete formula design matter as much as the INCI name itself.
